Mariners Program Ready for Summer 2004
Linda Orlow

The Lake Charlevoix Mariners Sailing School is preparing for another season of launching lots of new sailors and bringing others to higher levels.

Boyne City Marina will again be the base for the program from June 14 –July 2. The north end of Depot Beach, Charlevoix will be the new home for the program from July 12 –Aug. 20. The program provided sailing instruction to over 450 youth last summer. There will be evening adult classes at both locations.

The staff this year will include Trevor Davis of Petoskey as Head Instructor. Trevor is an excellent sailor and teacher who is in his freshman year at St. Olaf College, MN. We are happy to have Laura Schira returning for her third year as a Mariner Instructor. Laura is a freshman at WMU. Mike Kelly, brother of past Head Instructor Tom, will be a very solid part of the program. Mike is in his freshman year at MSU. We are very pleased to have Bridget McAvoy join the staff. She is in her third year as a first grade teacher in Central Lake. This is the largest staff in Mariner history. Please also welcome them as new CYC members!

The new brochures and registration forms will be available at CYC after March 20 or call Program Director, Tom Orlow 231-537-4484.

Area Regattas: Old and New

The 44th Annual Little Traverse Yacht Club “Ugotta Regatta” will be held July 31-Aug.1. The Race Chairman will be CYC member and LTYC Vice Commodore Bryan Burley (J-22 Rock Steady). He hopes to expand the participants to 88 this year. You will be hearing from him about the Regatta on Wed. nights! The notice of race is currently up on their website - www.ltyc.org.

There is a new race this summer... Mackinac to Manitoulin. The newly formed Little Current Yacht Club is hosting this three day, two leg 150 mile race after Port Huron to Mackinac from July 21-24. The planning and history of this new club and event is interesting. It seems very well organized. Read more about it all at www.lcyc.ca.
