Knot the Commodore's Corner
John P. Taylor, Past Commodore & Binnacle Editor
The club is open on Friday nights whether we have a host or not. Annette has informed me of new policy for hosts. She said, "Members who sign up to host on Friday nights will receive $20 in beverage coupons. The intent is to help cover the cost of appetizers ($20 is a recommended limit to spen) and also to allow the host to invite friends to introduce them to our club and membership allowing the host to buy them a beverage. We also hope this will encourage new volunteers to become active." Call Annette Nesburg now to reserve your date at 231-547-5111 days, 231-547-4979 evenings, or email shadow@screenmaster.net.
The regatta season is underway. By the time you read this issue, the BCYC Mark Madness will have come and gone. They hope to have raised significant dollars for Challenge Mountain.
The 2005 4-H Sailing School begins in Boyne City the week of June 13. Students between the ages of 8 and 19 are given instructions in all the necessary sailing skills, including sail trim, knot tying, teamwork, weather awareness, basic racing skills and rules. For more information, contact Lake Charlevoix Mariners c/o MSU Extension, 319 B. North Lake Street, Boyne City, MI 49712; phone 231-582-6232; or email Tom Orlow at torlow@hotmail.com.
Till next time, round the buoys on the inside and stay on the favored tack.
Pine Lake Regatta: the Beginning of Pentad Cup Series
June 18, 2005 - 6p start
Don Bowerman, Race Chair
Your boat has been buffed; bottom painted with the fast stuff; crew starting to click; now what?
The Pine Lake Overnight Regatta, that's what. Coming up June 18th, the Pine is the first of the CYC regattas and the most unique regatta designed to extend into some nighttime sailing. For those who have not tried this, the whole experience becomes different when the helm can no longer see the jib telltales. It has long been said that the Chicago-Mac race is won by the boat doing the best in the dark. So if you are going to do one of the Mac races, this race could be just the warmup you need.
For the two years I have sponsored the race, it has been blessed with clear skies and wonderful light shows. This year's date has been carefully chosen to have a 3/4 full moon rising at 8:42 p.m. which should be a good show at the turning mark off Horse Point. BIG CHANGE!! The start will be bumped back to 6:00 p.m. to give the fastest boats a chance to finish before midnight.
Also under consideration is the CYC Pentad Cup. To qualify for the Pentad, you boat must compete in each of five CYC regattas [Pine Lake - June 18; LaBlance (Beaver Island) - July 9 & 10; No Boundaries - August 6; Duke (Northport) - August 20; and Red Fox - September 3 & 4], of which this is the first. It's low bucks, no t-shirt, just for the challenge of doing it. Entry sheet available from Don Bowerman, phone 231-536-7975 or use the corrected email zedartemis@earthlink.net.

Kudos
This month kudos go to Jerry Seymour... Thank you, Jerry, for putting the control ropes (gates) on the bar. Also, correction for last month... I misspelled Ron Decosse's last name. Sorry, Ron. Can you please forgive me.
Still Wanted...
Friday Night Hosts
Please contact Annette at 231-547-5111. If you check the calendars, you should notice that opportunities exist to be a Friday night host for all of May and June. This is perhaps the easiest way to be active in the club. Simply call Annette Nesburg - with a date you have in mind. If you feel uncomfortable tending the bar, she can arrange for a paid bartender. Appetizers are encouraged but not mandated. Invite your friends, family and crew to join you at the club for a Friday evening of comraderie.
