Red Fox Regatta 2003 - Overall Division winners
It seems unclear how Overall division winners, as announced, were determined.
- SI 17.1 clarifies that each boats series score will be the total of her race scores, with 2 scheduled and 1 required to constitute a series.
- SI 17.4 states RRS A2.3 is changed to provide that "when a tie still remains it will be broken in favor of the boat with the lowest overall corrected time for the regatta."
- When awarding trophies for the division overall finish positions, ties were broken in favor of the boat with the lowest overall corrected time; regardless if a boat scored in a higher finishing position in one of the races.
Review and Findings:
- RRS A2 covers Series Scoring.
- RRS A2.3 does not exist.
- SI 17.1 clarifies this regatta as a series, with 2 races scheduled to be scored; 2 races were held, with ties existing.
- SI 17.4 wording infers a previous method of tie breaking was considered (i.e. "if a tie still remains")
- RRS A8 covers Series ties:
- RRS A8.1 shows a tie breaker at the first case where there is a difference in the best finish position between boats. The tie is broken in favor of the best finish position.
- RRS A8.2 (is the renumbered A8.3), where ties still remaining between boats are broken in favor of the best finish position of the tied boats in the last race, etc.
Comments:
It could also be assumed that SI 17.4 while stating RRS A2 incorrectly, and the reference of "still remains"; wanted overall corrected time to be used in determining the tie breaker for overall division finishes.
Recommendation:
- It is not the intention of the race committee to change the RRS more than necessary. The race committee feels that both races of the regatta / series should carry equal importance and therefore equal weight in scoring, and should not be used as the tie breaker if a tie exists after RRS A8.1 is applied.
- The committee intended to use the total corrected elapsed time to indicate a better performance between tied boats and concurrently act as the tie breaker for scoring purposes since there are so few races involved.
Action:
The race committee has determined Overall Division Finish positions as follows: A.) Where a tie in overall score exists; first follow RRS A8.1.
B.) Where a tie still exists; RRS A8.2 is to be changed to provide that "when a tie still remains, it will be broken in favor of the boat with the lowest overall corrected elapsed time."
C.) Boats previously awarded trophies for their finish positions are entitled to keep the trophy; where applicable, new trophies will be ordered and sent to the rescored boats.
D.) Final results will reflect the above.
Note:
Fortunately these changes will only affect the 3 rd place Overall finish in 4 of the divisions. The race committee apologizes to those boats affected.
Thanks for participating, see you next year,
Red Fox Regatta Race Committee
